Brief: The Walrus is Canada’s most honoured magazine. The not-for-profit Walrus Foundation publishes it. Its contributors are celebrated members within their fields (Bruce Mau, Leonard Cohen, Atom Egoyan, Margaret Atwood and Damien Hirst, to name a few). The magazine is part of a larger media platform that includes Walrus TV, Walrus website, and Walrus Laughs. It is a general interest magazine specializing in long-form journalism, essays, profiles, photo essays and illustrations. Its readers are culturally sophisticated and socially conscious. For our assignment, we were required to create a print campaign to position The Walrus as Canada’s brightest magazine.
Execution: This concept was inspired by the Rorschach personality and psychiatric test. The subject’s interpretation of the inkblots provides a glimpse into their mind’s inner workings. A Walrus reader sees things differently from others. This campaign would appeal to a group that enjoys exclusivity.
